Relationship Between Human Milk and 3'SL

As the third largest solid component in human milk after lactose and lipids, breast milk oligosaccharides play an important role in the healthy development of infants and young children. It mainly consists of two structures: one consists of neutral oligosaccharides, many of which are fucosylated; the other contains acidic oligosaccharides, most of which are sialylated. The most abundant structure of sialylated oligosaccharides is sialylated lactose produced by the combination of sialic acid and lactose, which can be divided into 3'SL and 6'-sialylated lactose according to the different binding positions. 3'SL is one of the simplest human milk oligosaccharides and is currently considered to be commercially available for infant formula.

Biological Activity of 3'SL

3'SL has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, which can protect infants from intestinal infections, help the development and maturation of infants' immune systems, promote infant brain maturation, and improve learning ability. Recent articles have investigated the effects of 3’SL on collagen-induced arthritis based on the discovery that 3’SL has anti-inflammatory properties and supports immune homeostasis. This study shows that 3′SL can improve the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis by blocking the NF-κB signaling pathway, inhibiting the expression of catabolic factors, inflammatory immune cell proliferation, and osteoclastogenesis.
