Physiological Function of 6'SL

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), the third major solid component in breast milk, are considered the first prebiotics to benefit infant health. Sialylated HMOs are an important class of HMOs, accounting for about 13% of the total HMOs. 6'SL is one of the simplest sialylated HMOs. The structures of different sialylated HMOs can be identified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMRS), which is based on the specific nucleus that can form a nuclear magnetic resonance signal when absorbing the energy provided by a specific frequency radio frequency field. 6'SL is an oligosaccharide, which is essentially NeuAc bounded to a lactose molecule through α-(2, 3)- and α-(2, 6)-linkages. 6'SL showed promising prebiotic effects, especially in shaping the gut microbiota and promoting the proliferation of bifidobacteria, it also exhibits multiple health effects, including anti-adhesive antimicrobial ability, antiviral activity, regulation of intestinal epithelial cell responses, immunomodulatory activity, regulation of inflammatory response and endothelial cell permeability, promotion of brain development, and cognitive improvement.
