Cyclic oligosaccharides composed of D-glucose units (connected by α(1→4) glycosidic bonds) are called cyclodextrins. (2-Carboxyethyl)-β-cyclodextrin and other negatively charged cyclodextrins can be used to chirally identify and resolve enantiomeric cationic racemic mixtures by capillary electrophoresis. Carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin can be used in the development of drug delivery vehicles (such as nanocarriers) and as a nucleic acid transfection agent.
