Compressible Sugar Analysis Service

Compressible Sugar Analysis Service

Sweeten Your Product Quality with Precision Analysis Services

Compressible sugar is a white or off-white crystalline powder or tiny particles, usually prepared by co-crystallization of sucrose and other pharmaceutical excipients. Compressible sugar is also a powerful pharmaceutical excipient in its own right and is often used as a diluent in the production of pharmaceuticals. At CD BioGlyco, we provide a professional compressible sugar analysis service to our clients worldwide with our cutting-edge Pharmaceutical and Biological Analysis technology and extensive experience in the analysis of Pharmaceutical Excipients.

  • Identification
    • Specific rotation assay: The specific rotation of the compressible sugar solution is not less than +62.6°, but the acid-treated compressible sugar solution is levorotatory.
    • Infrared spectroscopy: Compare the infrared spectra of the sample to be identified with the infrared spectra of the compressible sugar standard, if the positions and intensities of the peaks in the two spectra are the same, then the sample is proved to be compressible sugar.
  • Determination of content
Firstly, saturated lead acetate solution and hydrochloric acid solution are added to the compressible sugar solution. Then, it is pumped, filtered, and heated. Finally, the specific rotation of the diluted compressible sugar solution is determined and the content of sugar (C12H22O11) is calculated.
  • Chloride assay
Dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solutions are added to both the compressible sugar solution and the sodium chloride solution and they are placed against the same black background for observation. If they show the same phenomenon, it proves the presence of chloride in the compressible sugar.
  • Sulfate assay
First, we add dilute hydrochloric acid to both the compressible sugar solution and the potassium sulfate solution. Next, barium chloride solution is added to them and they are diluted. Finally, they are observed simultaneously on the same black background. If the compressible sugar solution and the potassium sulfate solution show the same phenomenon, it means that the compressible sugar contains sulfate.
  • Calcium salts
Add ammonium oxalate test solution to a solution of compressible sugar, if the solution remains clear for a short time, it is proved that the compressible sugar does not contain calcium salts.
  • Loss on drying
Drying of compressible sugar at temperatures over 100°C. At the end of drying, the weight loss of the compressible sugar shall not exceed 1.0%.
  • Scorch residue
Compressible sugar shall not leave a residue of more than 0.1 percent after burning.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is compressible sugar and its function?
Compressible sugar is compressible sucrose, also a white, granular, free-flowing powder with a sweet flavor. It is extremely soluble in water, non-hygroscopic, and does not react with other tablet ingredients. Currently, compressible sugar can be found in many medical dosage forms, such as chewable tablets, syrups, lozenges, or chewing gums. In addition, compressible sugar can also be found in sugar-free formulations.
  • What are the points of interest in the storage and application of compressible sugar?
Compressible sugar is stable at room temperature and low humidity. However, compressible sugar cannot co-exist with dilute acids as hydrolysis will occur. Compressible sugar also reacts with hydroxides of alkaline earth metals to form saccharides.
