Background

Sphingolipids are a class of amphiphilic lipids containing a sphingolipid backbone with a long chain of fatty acids attached to one end and polar alcohol at the other end. Sphingolipids, including gangliosides and sphingomyelin, generally exist in plant and animal membranes, especially in the tissues of the central nervous system. Sphingolipids are of great importance in cell signal regulation, maintenance of membrane functions and integrity, protection of lipoprotein structure and functions, and prevention or promotion of many diseases such as atherosclerosis.
