Erythromycin, an organic compound with the chemical formula C37H67NO13, is a macrolide antibiotic. Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic with excellent anti-infective properties and is often used in medical applications in the form of extended-release capsules, extended-release tablets, gels, solutions, injections, granules, or ointments.

Results: In this research, the authors developed a method for the removal of erythromycin using anaerobic fermentation techniques. In the research, authors explored the removal of erythromycin and its effect mechanism on anaerobic fermentation. Results showed that erythromycin removal was higher than 90% for all tested concentrations after fermentation. In addition, the authors found that the increase in erythromycin content facilitated the inhibition of biogas production. This also proved that erythromycin was able to inhibit the hydrolysis process in the early stage of anaerobic fermentation. The erythromycin was also able to inhibit the lignocellulose degradation in the later stages of fermentation. This study supports the reuse of antibiotic-contaminated biowaste and provides a reference for further research.
