Fatty acid amides (FAAs) are organic compounds formed from a fatty acid (FA) and an amine, such as ethanolamine or amino acid. FAAs can be synthesized from alkanolamine and a fatty acyl donor, such as a free FA or a FA alkyl ester, by chemical or enzymatic esterification or transesterification methods. The enzymatic synthesis of FAAs can be performed using lipases, or aminoacylases. FAAs are of considerable interest due to their wide-ranging industrial applications in the production of lubricants, detergents, shampoo, cosmetics, and surfactant formulations. In addition, FAAs, demonstrating a potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and possessing beneficial anti-inflammatory properties, provide an exciting opportunity to produce new medicines and nutraceuticals with applications in the treatment of several human diseases and human nutrition.

FAAs are bioactive lipids thought to be involved in the regulation of various physiological processes, including modulation of mono-aminergic systems, feeding, sleeping, reproduction, and inflammation. The separation of FAA is achieved by solid phase extraction (SPE) using cartridges. Our scientists perform the isolation, identification, structural characterization, and quantification of FAAs by multiple means. The isolated FAAs are identified and quantified via a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The structures of FAAs are identified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). An automatic biochemical analyzer and HPLC-QTOF-MS are also effective means to analyze FAAs. Moreover, CD BioGlyco provides customers with a one-stop analysis service including but not limited to:
