Galactan is a non-synthetic oligosaccharide derived from animal milk. In nature, trace amounts of galactan exist in animal milk, while human breast milk contains more. It has the general properties of oligosaccharides, has good bifidobacteria proliferation activity, and is a high-quality prebiotic. Galactan possesses strong selectivity for proliferating probiotics, promoting the growth of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, and at the same time inhibiting the growth of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract. Galactan can also regulate the intestinal flora of obese individuals and improve the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Intake of galactan directly improves gastrointestinal symptoms and may be utilized in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as bloating, gas, and abdominal pain.

Paper Title: Microwave-assisted synthesis and structural analysis of galactan.
Technology: Infrared spectroscopy (IR)

Results: As can be seen from the figure below, the strong and broad absorption peaks at 3000-3700 cm-1 are generated by the stretching vibration of O-H. The absorption peaks at 3406 cm-1 and 2930 cm-1 are generated by the stretching vibration of hydroxyl (-OH) and C-H stretching vibrations respectively, the absorption peaks at 1638 and 1572 cm-1 are C=O and the absorption peak at 1,411 cm-1 is C-O vibration generation. 1144, 1081, and 1036 cm-1 are characteristic absorption peaks of galactans, and the absorption peaks at 875 cm-1 and 797 cm-1 indicate the presence of α- and β-configurations in galactans, and the small peak at 695 cm-1 The small peak at 695 cm-1 is the characteristic absorption peak of galactans.
