Isomaltulose Analysis Service

What Is Isomaltulose?

Isomaltulose is combined with glucose molecules and fructose molecules connected by α-1,6 bonds, which is an isomer of sucrose. Isomaltulose will not be decomposed and digested in the mouth and stomach after being eaten, while will be slowly hydrolyzed into simple sugars by sucrase and isomaltase in the small intestine, and then absorbed and utilized. It provides lasting energy, without stimulating blood sugar to rise rapidly, and accelerates fat metabolism. The isomaltulose has been regarded as a generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which has been widely used as a substitute for sucrose in Europe and other regions.

Isomaltulose Analysis Service at CD BioGlyco

CD BioGlyco provides high-level isomaltulose analysis services in sugar mixtures, mainly including but not limited to the following technologies:

  • High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

HPLC is a commonly used separation and quantitative analysis method for the test of isomaltulose content in food and beverage samples, which uses an appropriate chromatographic column to separate samples and quantifies isomaltulose using an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) or refractive index detector (RID).

  • Gas Chromatography (GC)

For the analysis of isomaltulose, it is first necessary to hydrolyze isomaltulose into glucose and fructose, then use derivatization treatment to generate volatile substances, and use GC combined with a detector for separation and quantitative analysis.

  • Mass Spectrometry (MS)

MS combines with HPLC or GC methods, which are applied to identify and quantify trace amounts of isomaltulose in samples, which have high sensitivity and are not interfered with by the sample matrix during detection.

Paper Title: Rapid HPLC method for determination of isomaltulose in the presence of glucose, sucrose, and maltodextrins in dietary supplements

Technology: HPLC- ELSD

Journal: Foods

IF: 5.561

Published: 2020

Results: The authors developed a fast HPLC method for the test of isomaltulose in glucose, sucrose, and maltodextrin in dietary supplements. They selected the hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography mode (HILIC), ran the gradient elution program, and used the ELSD on the polyol stationary phase (HALO Penta-HILIC) for the test of isomaltulose. The results showed that isomaltulose and other compounds are separated well, and the method had the characteristics of high sensitivity and good repeatability.
