What Is Mannose?

Mannose is a natural bioactive monosaccharide found in plants, animals, and microorganisms. It is the C-2 epimer of glucose and usually exists in the pyranose and furanose forms. In nature, mannose exists in the form of homopolymers or heteropolymers in most cases, such as yeast mannan. However, there is a small amount of free mannose in oranges, apples, and other fruits and mammalian plasma. At present, mannose has been widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. For example, mannose is popular as a ready-to-use dietary supplement.

Mannose Metabolism

In plants, free mannose originates mainly from the degradation of hemicellulose and cellulose, which are then thoroughly metabolized in plant tissues. In microorganisms, mannose can participate in the ketose metabolism of various microorganisms. After being transferred by the cell membrane, mannose can be converted to fructose by mannose isomerase. Mannose is an essential glyconutrient for human health and can be obtained from dietary supplements or specific glycoproteins and glycolipids. Mannose in the human body is mainly absorbed and metabolized by the intestinal tract. Studies have shown that mannose is beneficial for diabetes, intestinal diseases, immune diseases, and more.
