Meso-Erythritol (i-Erythritol) is the precursor of an important tanning agent L-erythrose, and can be used as a carbon source for Gluconobacter bacteria. It is an aliphatic polyol, used for chemical analysis of the reactivity of various free radicals and free radical anions.
