Methylcellulose Analysis Service

The Key to Quality Control: Expert Methylcellulose (MC) Analysis

MC is a white or off-white, fibrous, or granular powder that is a nonionic cellulose ether that is introduced by methyl groups via etherification. As a common pharmaceutical excipient, MC can be used to make dispersants, emulsifiers, and stabilizers for vinyl chloride and styrene suspension polymerization. At CD BioGlyco, we have accumulated extensive experience in the field of Pharmaceutical Excipients Analysis. At the same time, with world-leading Pharmaceutical and Biological Analysis technology, we provide our clients with reliable MC analysis services.

Our analysis solutions of MC.

  • Solubility
MC dissolves in water to a clear or slightly turbid gelatinous solution, insoluble in anhydrous ethanol, trichloromethane, and ether.
  • Identification
    • Dissolve the sample to be tested in boiling water and add a sulphuric acid solution of anthrone to it. If the sample is MC, a blue-green color will appear at the junction of the liquid levels.
    • After adding sulphuric acid and ninhydrin solution to the above solution, the sample is proved to be MC if the solution appears red and does not change color for a longer time.
  • Content test
We use gas chromatography to test the content of MC in the samples. It is worth noting that the sample preparation temperature should be kept at 140°C ± 2°C during the test.
  • Viscosity test
After adding the appropriate amount of hot water to the MC, it is stirred thoroughly. Later, we use a viscometer to measure its viscosity. To get more accurate results, three experiments are conducted and finally, the average value of the experimental results is taken.
  • pH
We use a pH meter to test the pH of MC. The pH of MC should be between 5.0 and 8.0.
  • Loss on drying
MC should not lose more than 5.0% of its weight by drying at 105°C for 1 hour.

Results: MC is an important food additive known for its complex rheological behavior, such as its thermoregulation. The authors describe through dynamic mechanical partitioning and fractional rheology the frequency and temperature dependence of the MC relationship in this paper. The results of the research suggest that the thermoregulation of MC is related to the fluidity of the polymer chains and can be described as a process similar to the glass transition in polymers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the methods of dissolution of MC?
    • Hot water method: The required amount of hot water is placed in a container and heated to about 70°C. Gradually add MC to slow stirring, at first the MC floats on the surface of the water, and gradually forms a slurry, which is cooled to dissolve it.
    • Powder mixing method: MC powder particles and an equal or greater number of other powdered ingredients, by dry mixing to fully disperse, and then add water to dissolve, then the MC can be dissolved without coagulation.
    • Organic solvent wetting method: Use organic solvents such as ethanol, glycol, or oil to pre-dispersed or wet MC, and then solve it with water, so that MC can also be smoothly dissolved.
  • What are the functions or uses of MC?
MC is a very stable substance that can resist the action of acids, alkalis, microorganisms, heat, etc. Currently, MC can be extensively used in the construction industry. For instance, it can be used as a mixing agent for cement, mortar, jointing mastic, and others. In addition, in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries, MC can also be used as a binder for film-forming agents.
