Recombinant Bacillus subtilis lysozyme 23A produced by Escherichia coli, is involved in the hydrolysis of 1,4-β-linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetyl-glucosamine residues in peptidoglycan, as well as between N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues in chitodextrins.
