Sodium Starch Glycolate Analysis Service

Sodium Starch Glycolate Analysis Service

The Partner You Need for Sodium Starch Glycolate (SSG) Analysis

CD BioGlyco provides comprehensive Pharmaceutical and Biological Analysis solutions including Pharmaceutical Analysis, Biological Evaluation, and Pharmaceutical Excipient Analysis services. SSG is the sodium salt of starch carboxymethyl ether produced by starch acting with chloroacetic acid under alkaline conditions. It is necessary to analyze SSG for source, particle size, amount of sodium chloride (reaction by-product), viscosity, degree of substitution, and cross-linking type, as these are closely related to the functionality of SSG.

  • Identification
    • Microscopy: Our researchers place liquid paraffin-mounted SSGs under the microscope. The characteristics of starch are varied greatly from one source to another. Potato starch is characterized as a single granule, ovoid, round, or pear-shaped, with diameters ranging from 30 μm to 100 μm. Corn starch is characterized as a single granule, polygonal or round-like, with diameters ranging from 5 μm to 30 μm.
    • Chromogenic reaction: Our researchers identify SSG by adding an iodized test solution to an aqueous solution of SSG and observing for an immediate blue color.
    • Flame reaction: Our researchers determine SSG by burning a platinum wire with SSG in a colorless flame and observing the color of the flame.
  • Basic test
    • Our team provides some simple analyses including swelling volume analysis, loss on drying analysis, microbial limit test, and pH analysis.
  • Content test
    • Sodium chloride: We offer accurate sodium chloride quantification services by silver nitrate titration.
    • Sodium glycolate: After dissolution, precipitation, filtration, and dilution of sodium glycolate, we measure its absorbance at 540 nm using UV-Vis spectrophotometry.
    • Chloroacetic acid: We offer chloroacetic acid determination using anion exchange chromatography. Our researchers calculate the peak area of the standard and the test SSG according to the external standard method.
  • Structure and particle size distribution test
    • Particle size and size distribution: We use light scattering to determine the particle size and size distribution of SSG. By measuring the energy distribution of the scattered light (scattering angle), our researchers calculate the particle size distribution of the particles.
    • Structural characterization: we use Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to analyze the structure of SSG.

Results: In this work, the researchers analyzed the concentration of SSG (derived from sago starch), polymer particle size, elemental composition, and degree of substitution. Researchers found that the enhanced swelling of SSG is due to its specific cross-linking mechanism. The sodium content of SSG is optimal in the range of 2.8% - 2.9%, which enhances the speed and effectiveness of dissolution. SSG is a very efficient disintegrant due to the complex interactions between the water molecules and the starch structure.
