Soluble Starch Analysis Service

Soluble Starch Analysis Service

Precise Solutions for Your Soluble Starch Analysis Needs

Soluble starch is produced by processing starch to improve its solubility in water through enzymatic or acid hydrolysis, etc. Soluble starch is usually a white or off-white powder. In the pharmaceutical field, soluble starch is widely used as an excipient in pharmaceutical preparations and can be used in the development of substances such as diluents and disintegrants. At CD BioGlyco, we have a well-established Pharmaceutical Excipient Analysis system with advanced Pharmaceutical and Biological Analysis technologies to provide reliable soluble starch analysis services to every client.

  • Identification
    • When the starch samples are placed under the microscope, most of the soluble starch from the maize source shows polygonal granules, round or oval granules, with diameters ranging from 2 to 35 μm. Those from cassava sources are mostly single, round, or oval, with diameters ranging from about 5 to 35 μm, and there is a concavity on the edge of the starch granules. Soluble starch from potato sources is single, oval, or pear-shaped, with diameters ranging from 30 to 100 μm, occasionally exceeding 100 μm.
    • After a starch sample solution has been boiled-cooled, a small amount of iodine test solution is added to it. If the sample solution shows blue-black, blue, blue-violet, purple-red, or red color, the sample is proved to be soluble starch.
  • Iodine sensitivity
Add iodine titrant to the soluble starch solution, which should appear pure blue or purplish red. Next, a sodium thiosulphate solution is added to the solution and the color of the solution disappears.
  • pH
We test the pH of soluble starch with a pH meter. Soluble starch should have a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
  • Reducing sugar assay
After adding the alkaline copper tartrate test solution to the soluble starch solution, the precipitate is collected. Then the precipitates are washed with ethanol and ether, respectively, and dried.
Among them, the residue of soluble starch from potato sources should not exceed 0.15% of the total amount. Residues of soluble starch from other sources should not exceed 0.25 percent of the total.
  • Chloride assay
Under the same conditions, dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solutions are added to the soluble starch solution and standard sodium chloride solution, respectively. Next, they are placed against a black background for observation to compare the changes that occur in the two solutions. If the phenomena produced by the soluble starch solution and the standard sodium chloride solution are consistent, then the soluble starch contains chloride.
  • Oxidizing substance assay
After the soluble starch is fully dissolved in water, glacial acetic acid and potassium iodide are added to it. Next, we titrate with sodium thiosulfate solution until the blue or purple color disappears. Finally, the amount of oxidized substances in the soluble starch is calculated according to the amount of titrant used.
  • Iron salt assay
After the soluble starch solution is treated with acid, an appropriate amount of ammonium sulfate is added to it. The depth of color of the soluble starch solution is compared with that of a standard iron solution. It is important to note that the color of the treated soluble starch solution should not be darker than that of the standard iron solution.
  • Loss on drying
Soluble starch should not lose more than 13.0% of its weight by drying at 130°C for 90 minutes.

Results: In this literature, the authors have characterized the nanoparticles containing soluble starch using SEM, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectra. The experimental results show that the physicochemical behavior of such nanoparticles in the presence of soluble starch is strongly influenced by pH. After characterization by SEM, FT-IR, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectra, the authors observed that the nanoparticle particles obtained at higher pH have better stability. This also suggests that soluble starch has a contributing effect on the stability of nanoparticles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the applications of soluble starch in formulations?
In the pharmaceutical field, soluble starch is used as a pharmaceutical excipient, mainly for the development of diluents and disintegrants. Meanwhile, soluble starch is also particularly suitable for the preparation of low-sugar sugar-free punches and as a filler for herbal extracts. In addition, soluble starch is more stable than dextrin and has a strong adsorption force, so when preparing capsules, the addition of soluble starch can improve the fluidity of the drug.
  • What is the difference between soluble and water-soluble starch?
The difference between soluble starch and water-soluble starch lies in their water solubility, water-soluble starch can be dissolved in cold water, while soluble starch can only be dissolved in hot water. The biggest difference between the two is due to their molecular structure, soluble starch can be turned into water-soluble starch through further processing.
