Functions of Xylooligosaccharide (XOS)

XOS is a polymer containing 2-7 xylose monomeric units linked by β-(1,4) linkage, which is produced from lignocellulosic materials by chemical or enzymatic methods. XOS acts as a prebiotic, selectively feeding the beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract. XOS has undergone numerous clinical trials demonstrating multiple health benefits, including improvements in blood sugar and blood lipids, improved digestive health, laxatives, and beneficial changes in immune markers. As non-digestible food ingredients for humans, XOS exhibits many bioactivities such as stimulation of the growth of probiotic Bifidogenic and lactic acid bacteriain the gut, improvement of calcium biological availability, reduction of the risk of colon cancer, immunomodulatory properties, antioxidant effects, and antimicrobial activities.

  • Xylans under different hydrolysis methods are compared by the HILIC-ELSD method, meanwhile, it is used to monitor XOS contents from different agricultural wastes.
