The rapid development of NPs has important implications for tumor diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring because of their important contributions to detecting cancer cells, delivering chemotherapeutic agents, and controlling therapeutic responses. In recent years, several new-generation drug delivery vehicles, diagnostic systems, and contrast agents based on the use of NPs have been developed for theranostic applications. Among them, AuNPs have been widely used in various biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility, simple synthesis, convenient surface modification, and tunable optical properties.
Surface modifications with polymers and natural biomolecules are commonly used to improve the targeting and biocompatibility of AuNPs. HA has been widely used in the development of nanocarriers due to its excellent water solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and non-immunogenicity. HA was shown to perform effective "surface modification" on AuNPs, affecting the physicochemical properties of AuNPs. The modified nanocarriers exhibited preferential tumor accumulation and increased cellular uptake in cancer cells.
