CD BioGlyco is dedicated to helping clients design and develop advanced and efficient multifunctional polysaccharide-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment to effectively remove certain chemicals such as dyes, heavy metals, and phenolic compounds. Our advances in the field of Carbohydrate-based Biodegradable Materials help guide the rational manufacture and application of polysaccharide-based adsorbents for wastewater remediation.

Applications of Polysaccharide-based Biodegradable Materials for Wastewater Treatment

The presence of toxic water pollutants restricts the sustainable supply of clean water worldwide. Wastewater treatment typically utilizes physical, chemical, and biological methods to treat wastewater to make maximum use of water resources. Among them, physical methods relying on physical adsorbents are widely used in wastewater treatment as a low-cost, easy-to-treat, and efficient strategy. Among the various materials that can be used to construct adsorbents, polysaccharide-based materials have cut a brilliant figure in wastewater treatment applications due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, high adsorption capacity, and ease of modification.

Numerous studies have shown that polysaccharide-based biodegradable materials exhibit better removal capabilities of certain pollutants such as metal ions and dyes than other low-cost adsorbents and commercially available activated carbons. Such efficient polymeric sorbents offer both an alternative strategy for complexation and extraction processes and the prospect for future commercial purposes. Several polysaccharide-based materials have already been developed for wastewater treatment, such as crosslinked chitosan and chitosan–cyclodextrin beads.

Development Services of Polysaccharide-based Biodegradable Material for Wastewater Treatment at CD BioGlyco

Our researchers are working to develop polysaccharide-based adsorbents as an alternative to the traditional method of removing contaminants from the solution. We focus on the latest developments in the synthesis and chemistry of polysaccharide-based materials and offer a variety of chemical and physical strategies to give them more desirable properties.

  • Preparation and design of polysaccharide-based adsorbents
We offer two strategies to help our clients synthesize polysaccharide-based adsorbents, including cross-linked polysaccharides (polysaccharide-dominated adsorbents) and immobilized polysaccharides (introduction of polysaccharides to a pre-existing insoluble matrix). The methods used to prepare cross-linked polysaccharides are also suitable for the immobilization of polysaccharides. We synthesize polysaccharide networks by chemical or physical means.
    • Physically cross-linked polysaccharides
In physically cross-linked polysaccharides, the polymer chains are usually linked by non-covalent physical sites, including hydrogen bonding interactions, crystallization, ionic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and colloidal assembly.
    • Chemically cross-linked polysaccharides
Chemically cross-linked polysaccharide networks are created by reacting the water-soluble groups in the polysaccharide chains with cross-linking agents. The strong covalent bonds created between the polymer chains lead to higher mechanical stability and persistence. The methods we commonly use to prepare covalently cross-linked polysaccharides include radiation cross-linking and chemical reactions (Schiff base reaction, Michael addition, and click chemistry).
  • Characterization of adsorption properties of polysaccharide-based adsorbents
    • Calculation of adsorption capacity and removal efficiency
    • Analysis of adsorption kinetics
    • Analysis of adsorption isotherms
    • Analysis of adsorption thermodynamics
