HPC is a non-ionic cellulose ether prepared by reacting basic cellulose with propylene oxide under high temperature and pressure. It is divided into Low-substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (L-HPC) and high-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (H-HPC) depending on the content of the substituent hydroxypropoxy groups.   • Identification
    • An aqueous solution of HPC reacts with a sulphuric acid solution of anthrone to produce a blue-green substance.
    • The slurry liquid formed when HPC is added to water forms a film on a glass plate.
    • The solution formed by adding water to HPC shows a flocculent precipitate when heated, and this precipitate dissolves when the temperature is lowered.
  • Basic characteristics
    HPC is a white or off-white powder or granule that swells to form a colloidal solution in water, ethanol, or propylene glycol, but hardly dissolves in hot water.
  • Content detection
    We use gas chromatography (GC) to determine the amount of HPC in the samples. The amount of HPC can be determined by the area of the peaks in the obtained GC.
  • Viscosity
    After making a solution of HPC at a specific concentration, we choose a rotational viscometer to determine the viscosity value of HPC.
  • pH
    After heating-cooling the HPC solution, we use a pH meter to check its pH value, which should be between 5.0 and 8.0.
  • Chlorides
    Chlorides usually react with silver nitrate to form a precipitate. Therefore, we add silver nitrate solution to a dilute solution of HPC and observe whether a white precipitate is produced to determine the presence of chlorides in HPC.
  • Residual solvents (isopropanol and toluene)
    GC: The GC of HPC is tested using cyanopropylphenyl-dimethylpolysiloxane as a stationary solution. Using the external standard method, isopropanol and toluene quantities can be determined by reference to peak area.
  • Scorch residue
    The residue of HPC should not exceed 0.8% of the weight of the dried HPC after sufficiently cauterizing the HPC.

Results: In this article, the authors tested the flowability, working time, and setting time of calcium silicate types of cement containing different levels of HPC and also performed calcium ion release analysis. The experimental results showed that HPC has a significant enhancement effect on flow values and setting time of calcium silicate cement (CSV) and promotes calcium ion release well. In addition, low-viscosity HPC altered the composition of CSC, thus enabling it to meet the requirements for use as a root canal sealer.
