Based on an experienced team and well-established laboratory equipment, CD BioGlyco provides high-quality development services for Biodegradable Materials Based on Disaccharides. Lactose is a disaccharide composed of a glucose unit covalently bound to a galactose unit, which exists in the form of α- or β-heterodimers. It is rich in hydroxy functionality and ease of functionalization, making it attractive as a raw material for the preparation of hydrophilic materials. We provide a one-stop service for the development of lactose-based biodegradable materials including hydrogels.
Hydrogel is a hydrophilic polymer network. Incorporation of carbohydrates such as lactose into the polymer structure is a viable strategy to introduce hydrophilicity. We prepare lactose-based hydrogels by chemical cross-linking (formed by covalent bonding connections between polymer chains) or physical cross-linking (electrostatic interactions, strong hydrogen bonding, van der Waals interactions, etc.). After determining the experimental scheme, by modifying lactose or mixing it with other polymers, we prepare lactose-based hydrogels by click chemistry, photopolymerization reaction, etc. In the process of preparation, we regulate the mechanical properties, water absorption, and rheology of the resulting hydrogels by changing the ratio of lactose, etc.
In addition, we develop biodegradable materials such as lactose-based films for food packaging and drug delivery.
For specific biodegradable materials, we have a very comprehensive material analysis program. We analyze the chemical, biological, and physical properties of the material.

Results: In this study, a lactose-based hydrogel was prepared using lactose from dairy industry waste. The lactose was derivatized with methacrylic anhydride (MAH), while methacrylate groups were added to the lactose. The lactose-based photopolymerization into a hydrogel was finally successfully synthesized by hydrogel photopolymerization reaction using methacrylic acid (and/or corresponding salt) as the copolymerizing monomer. The physical and chemical properties of the hydrogel were examined, and the results showed that the hydrogel had a good performance, and hydrogels with different properties could be prepared by changing the ratio of lactose and MAH.
