It is converted to mono-phosphoryl AZT, bis-phosphoryl AZT, and tri-phosphoryl AZT by cellular kinases. Then tri-phosphoryl AZT is embedded in the synthesis chain of viral DNA to terminate the synthesis of viral DNA. In addition, scientists find that the ultraviolet absorption wavelength changes when the oxygen atom at the 4-position of thymidine is replaced by a sulfur atom. The compound shows extreme sensitivity to long-wave ultraviolet light and is susceptible to photochemical reactions under near-ultraviolet radiation. Studies have shown that 4-thiothymidine can selectively target cancerous cells and tissues. It embeds itself in the form of nucleotides into the DNA of target cells, making it more sensitive to near-ultraviolet light (UVA); it kills cancerous cells under the action of near-ultraviolet light.
