Properties of Carboxylated Polysaccharides

Carboxylated polysaccharides are water-dispersible and have received a lot of attention from scientists because they can be used as drug carriers. Currently, polysaccharides containing carboxylic groups such as hyaluronic acid, xanthan exemplify, and gellan have been prepared in large quantities and are widely used in many fields such as food, cosmetics, medicine, and pharmaceuticals. These products can be recovered from natural sources and are biodegradable and biocompatible, which makes them an important alternative to conventional synthetic polymers such as polyolefinic and polyacrylic products.

In carboxylic groups-containing polysaccharides, the presence of hydrogen bonds that can lead to the formation of secondary structures and the high reactivity of the carboxylic groups make it challenging to obtain selectively modified derivatives. Notably, it is interesting to obtain carboxylated polysaccharides in their derivative forms thus affecting their biofunctional properties. The properties of these polysaccharides such as bioavailability, biodegradability, ionic strength, and thickening/gelling properties can be extensively varied by introducing chemical modifications at, for example, hydroxyl groups.

We offer different oxidation methods such as the use of hypochlorite, sodium periodate, or ozone to form aldehyde structures which are then further oxidized in situ to carboxylate groups using oxidants. We offer customized synthesis protocols to suit our customer's specific needs and control the percentage of carboxyl groups incorporated, the attachment position, and molecular weight by controlling the nature, amount, and conditions of oxidation or hydrolysis.
  • Characterization of carboxylated polysaccharides
    We offer Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and titration to help our clients characterize the structure of these materials and analyze the carboxyl content.
