Custom Cyclodextrin Development

Overview

Cyclodextrins are still regarded as novel excipients of unexplored potential since their discovery in the late 19th century. Over the years, CD BioGlyco has established a multifunctional and advanced GlycoTM Synthesis Platform and cyclodextrin development platform to facilitate research in cyclodextrin development. We are dedicated to providing our clients with the highest quality professional services.

Key Technologies

Microwave irradiation; Supercritical carbon dioxide; Co-precipitation; Spray-dried

Properties of Cyclodextrin

Cyclodextrins are enzyme-modified starch derivatives, cyclic oligosaccharides containing six (α-cyclodextrin), seven (β-cyclodextrin), eight (γ-cyclodextrin), or more (α-1,4-)-linked D-glucopyranose units. The cyclodextrins have toroidal shapes, with the smaller and the larger pockets of the toroid exposed to the solvent secondary and primary hydroxyl groups respectively. As a consequence of this arrangement, cyclodextrins can host plenty of hydrophobic molecules, or part of them inside their cavity through non-covalent interactions to form host-guest type clathrate. Cyclodextrin clathrate containing hydrophobic molecules can penetrate body tissues, these could be used to release biologically active compounds under specific conditions. Cyclodextrins are chemically versatile and can be modified to get mono- or poly-substituted derivatives, which can improve their properties (i.e., solubility and stability), and tune their complexation abilities. The complexation process leads to significant changes in guest spectral properties, reactivity, volatility, solubility, and stability. In addition, they are widely used in food, pharmaceutical, agriculture, and chemical industries, as well as the cosmetics industry, oilfield applications, and biotechnology fields.

Our Services

Cyclodextrins have been utilized in a diversity of technological fields. For instance, the development of new and improved analytical technologies using cyclodextrins is highly valuable for the pharmaceutical field. With a professional synthesis platform, CD BioGlyco provides our clients with scientific assistance in the research of cyclodextrins. Particularly, we provide several strategies to prepare cyclodextrins-guest complexes including kneading, grinding, microwave irradiation, supercritical carbon dioxide, co-precipitation, and spray-dried. The cyclodextrins-guest complexes can be applied to the development of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical cyclodextrins.

Results: In this article, the authors provided a comprehensive overview of cyclodextrins, which are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of at least six d-(+)-glucopyranose units, with natural variations (α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins) differing in size and solubility. They highlighted the unique structure of cyclodextrins, featuring a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic inner cavity, which enables them to encapsulate various molecules. The authors discussed the extensive and diverse applications of cyclodextrins across numerous industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, textiles, biotechnology, agriculture, and environmental processes, attributing their utility to properties like biocompatibility, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, the article delves into research advancements concerning the design, synthesis, characterization, and practical uses of cyclodextrins, emphasizing their capacity to enhance the solubility and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble substances and to act as catalysts in various reactions.
