GT participates in cellular proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, signal transduction, cell-to-cell interactions, tumorigenesis, and metastasis. GT1 gangliosides bind to myelin, the insulating layer that wraps around nerves, and thus connects it with the neuron. GT2 is associated with tumors. It acts as an immediate precursor to the more complex GT1 gangliosides. GT3 is elevated in the human retina, suggesting that it may play specific roles in the structure and function of the tissue. It also acts as a precursor to more complex gangliosides.

CD BioGlyco provides gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and mass spectrometric technologies to analyze GT. Taking bovine adrenal medulla tissue as an example, we isolate and characterize it through the following procedures.
Homogenize bovine adrenal medulla tissue in cold acetone. Check the purity of the isolated gangliosides by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) using the appropriate solvent system.
Compositional analysis is performed by gas-liquid chromatography, mainly analyzing neutral sugars, sialic acid, fatty acids, and long-chain bases.
The enzymatic reaction is carried out using neuraminidase. Each sample under different hydrolysis conditions is dried under nitrogen flow and the salts are removed by column chromatography.
Purification of permethylated gangliosides is achieved by TLC and a chloroform-methanol-hexane solvent system. Trimethylsiloxy derivatives of methanol products are analyzed by GLC and GLC-mass spectrometry (MS).
